Postcard from the UN: CSW69 | March 2025

In March 2025, the global community marked the thirtieth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995) at the sixty-ninth session of the Commission on the Status of Women at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Invited to attend were representatives of Member States, UN entities, and accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world—including SHE.

Here is a note from SHE's Chief Operating Officer How Kay Lii, who attended CSW69 with SHE chairperson Stefanie Yuen Thio.

My inaugural #CSW69 experience has lit a fire in my belly—there is so much we can do, both in Singapore and on larger platforms, to contribute to critical discussions on women’s safety and empowerment, pushing the agenda for a better, fairer world for girls and women.

In today’s “complex times” (a recurring theme throughout the gathering), conventions like this are even more vital, giving advocates a sense of purpose and solidarity.

I’ve learned so much from global counterparts on topics such as women in leadership, creating safe spaces for women both online and offline, and ensuring equal access to opportunities, among others.

There were diverse perspectives, unique challenges, and a vast array of cultural landscapes to navigate, but at its core, it all comes down to empathy, activism, and partnerships. These conversations remind us that progress happens when we care, and when we have the courage to raise our voices and the compassion to support one another.

Grateful for the connections made, the insights gained, and the renewed sense of purpose. Thank you to the Ministry of Social and Family Development for the opportunity to lend Singapore’s voice to this important conversation. Let’s keep moving forward together!
